Despite high-profile members abandoning ship, the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insists it is far from defeated. In a television interview, the party’s spokesman declared that its true power comes not from politicians in power, but from the millions of ordinary Nigerians who support it.

The PDP acknowledges that the recent departure of a state governor is a setback. However, the party argues that these defections are not about political differences or ideas. Instead, it accuses the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using strong-arm tactics—including threats and financial offers—to poach opposition members and weaken their structure.

“When a governor defects, it’s a concern, but the strength of the PDP is not in governors — it’s in the people,” the spokesman stated. He pointed to the continued public interest in the party as proof that it remains a major force in the country’s politics.

Looking ahead, the PDP believes the upcoming 2027 elections will not be decided by which party has the most powerful figures. Instead, they predict that the outcome will be determined by the daily realities for Nigerians: the severe economic hardship and widespread insecurity affecting the nation.
