Benue Government Demands Stronger Apology Over Remarks Against Governor Alia.

The Benue State Government has intensified its response to comments made by former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Jime, insisting that public officials must be held accountable for statements directed at elected institutions and office holders. The position was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Makurdi by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Tersoo Kula.

At the centre of the dispute is Jime’s description of Governor Alia as “this thing terrorising us,” a remark for which the former Speaker later expressed regret. However, the state government argued that the apology failed to adequately address the governor and the people of Benue State, maintaining that the response did not meet the standard expected from someone who has occupied high public offices.

According to the government, accountability in public discourse requires clear ownership of controversial remarks and direct engagement with those affected by them. Officials said a proper apology should have been specifically addressed to Governor Alia and residents of the state, rather than being framed in what they described as a general manner.

The government also questioned the appropriateness of the original comments, noting that respect for democratic institutions remains essential regardless of political disagreements. It argued that criticism of government policies should not undermine the dignity of constitutional offices, particularly from individuals with extensive experience in public service.

In its statement, the administration further defended Governor Alia’s record in Makurdi Local Government Area, Jime’s home base, pointing to what it described as significant infrastructure projects executed by the current government. The administration suggested that the criticism was difficult to reconcile with developments it says have taken place in the area over the past three years.

While stopping short of announcing any further action, the Benue State Government reiterated its demand for what it called a full and unequivocal apology. Officials said the issue goes beyond a disagreement between political figures and touches on the broader responsibility of leaders to promote civility, respect and accountability in public engagement.
