Concerns are mounting over civilian safety in Nigeria’s conflict-affected North-East following a recent airstrike on Jilli Market along the Borno–Yobe border, an operation military sources say was aimed at insurgent activity.

Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, on Saturday addressed the development, describing the strike as a calculated military decision based on intelligence reports that identified the location as a hub for terrorist logistics.

According to him, the weekly market had been repeatedly linked to operations of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, with insurgents allegedly using the area to collect levies, source supplies, and coordinate attacks.

However, the incident has again drawn attention to the risks faced by civilians living and trading in volatile regions, especially in places where insurgents are said to operate within public spaces.

Buratai acknowledged that civilian casualties recorded in the strike were regrettable, but explained that such outcomes often arise when armed groups position themselves within civilian populations, making it difficult to isolate targets during military operations.

He recalled that security forces had previously shut down the market during earlier operations, including in 2018, but noted that activities eventually resumed despite ongoing security concerns.

The former army chief urged residents in nearby communities such as Geidam, Gubio, Damasak, and Ngamdu to avoid areas believed to be under insurgent influence, warning that continued interaction with such locations increases exposure to danger.

While reaffirming support for ongoing military efforts, he emphasised the need for greater public awareness and cooperation, noting that reducing civilian presence in high-risk zones remains critical to preventing further loss of life as operations against insurgents continue.
