Efforts to prevent violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State received renewed attention on Thursday as candidates and representatives of 14 political parties signed a peace accord under the supervision of the National Peace Committee. The agreement, witnessed by electoral officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders and security stakeholders, is intended to promote a peaceful, free and credible election across the state.

The peace meeting, led by the National Peace Committee chaired by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, with the session presided over by Rev. Matthew Kukah, provided a platform for political leaders to raise concerns about the security climate. Also present were former Chief of Army Staff, General Martins Agwai, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan.

During the meeting, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke appealed to the committee to intervene over what he described as escalating political violence in the state. The governor alleged that eight members of his Accord Party had been killed within the last three months, while more than 60 party leaders had been arrested and transferred to detention facilities in Abuja and Nasarawa State. He called on the committee to engage the Inspector General of Police and other relevant authorities over the development.

Adeleke also alleged that members of his party had been subjected to intimidation and attacks ahead of the election. He urged the National Peace Committee to help de-escalate tensions and ensure that all political actors operate in an atmosphere free from violence. The governor further appealed for those in police custody to be returned to Osun State and prosecuted within the state’s judicial system where necessary.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Osun State Government, Alhaji Teslim Igbalaye, regained his freedom after being released from police custody. His release was confirmed by the Imole Campaign Council through its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, who expressed appreciation to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan. Igbalaye had been arrested on Wednesday over allegations involving the possession of Permanent Voter Cards and more than four million naira.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, acknowledged concerns over reported security incidents but assured stakeholders that the commission remained committed to conducting a credible governorship election. He said violence and intimidation pose a direct threat to the democratic process and stressed that the commission would work with security agencies to ensure that voters are able to exercise their rights without fear.

Also addressing participants, Cardinal John Onaiyekan reminded political parties that the peace accord represents a commitment to protect democracy rather than a ceremonial exercise. He urged all contestants and their supporters to uphold the agreement before, during and after the election, maintaining that only a peaceful environment can guarantee that the will of the people is freely expressed at the polls.
