The race for Ondo South Senatorial ticket in 2027: a Contest of Loyalty, Power, and Humanity.

The race for Ondo South Senatorial ticket in 2027: a Contest of Loyalty, Power, and Humanity.

In 2027, Nigerians will file out to vote their federal legislatures both into the upper and lower chambers of the National Assembly. Ondo South constituents will be excited to execute this statutory and fundamental civic duty that underscores the bond of social contract between them and the would be successful Senator who will light up the candle of Senatorial representation of the district on the hallowed floor of The Red Chamber.

Here is the critical opinion of a professional Research body with poll presence in Ondo Southern Senatorial District : “The race for Ondo South is not for the mighty, but for the one who can listen, connect, and convince,” . That is the evaluation of the research arm of Voice of Hope, a civic study group monitoring the politics of the South Senatorial District. Their October 1, 2025, survey underscores the fierce competition unfolding among some of the region’s most notable political figures and ‘Senator wannabes.’

At the center of their field Poll analysis is Morayo Lebi, rated first and described as the “best-positioned candidate.” Morayo Lebi is a lawyer and solicitor from Irele Local Government. Interestingly enough, Lebi is portrayed by the researchers as “a grassroots politician who started as a progressive and never lost touch with the ordinary people.” His earlier faceoff with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the primaries did not fracture party unity; instead, it reinforced his loyalty. “Lebi embodies the classic progressive archetype—he obeys party supremacy, honors collective decisions, and still manages to remain accessible to his base,” observes Dr. Funmilayo Ogundipe, a Political Scientist.

The study suggests that Aiyedatiwa himself may discreetly lean toward Lebi’s candidacy, seeing in him a loyalist who places party above self. Analysts further note his “media friendliness” and reputation as “a listening man who believes in humanity” could make him a formidable frontrunner.

This resonates with a famous remark by American political strategist Bob Beckel, who argued: “Loyalty in politics is not just about staying with the party—it’s about proving to the people that you can be trusted to stay with them.” In both Nigeria and the United States, Beckel stressed, grassroots loyalty often outweighs raw ambition and raw ambition that rides roughshod on palpable ego cannot intimidate sincerity and loyalty to party structure and ethos

Trailing closely is Distinguished Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (OFR), the incumbent voice of Ondo South in the Red Chamber. Ibrahim’s intellectual prowess and oratorical authority have earned him recognition across Abuja. “If the ticket is decided in Abuja, Jimoh Ibrahim will walk away with it,” one Voice of Hope analyst remarked, adding that the Igbotako born business mogul and big time politician affects a larger than life air both in The Red Chamber and on oversight functions, even as the poll insisted that Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as far as Senatorial representation on the floor of the Senate is concerned, he has acquitted himself quite well . Yet scholars caution that his re-election prospects may be dimmed by what a Political Economist , Dr Ayo Vincent Akoni calls his “poverty of human development philosophy.” Ibrahim’s distance from grassroots empowerment, coupled with frosty ties to state party leaders, could limit his local appeal despite his national stature.

Beckel once drew a sharp line between intellectual brilliance and political electability, insisting: “You can win a debate with ideas, but you win elections with people.” Ibrahim’s authority on global discourse, sagacity on war and peace issues and brilliant dialectics may echo in Abuja’s chambers and at international parliamentary fora but if voters at home feel neglected, his brilliance could fall flat in the 2027 ballot box.

The third notable contender according to the poll is Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin of Odigbo Local Government, whose popularity rating cannot be undermined. He is described in the survey as “a loyal party man to the core, generous in empowerment, and consistent in touching the lives of constituents.” During his House of Representatives tenure, Akinfolarin provided employment opportunities and amenities, cementing his reputation as “a benefactor to party loyalists.” His grassroots connection and media awareness may help him consolidate momentum as the campaigns intensify.

Here, too, Beckel’s insight offers perspective. “Every successful campaign I’ve run started with one thing—showing people something tangible you’ve done for them,” he once said, pointing out that empowerment politics, whether in the U.S. or Nigeria, often determines who can mobilize loyal bases most effectively beyond spic and span Queen’s rhetorics.

Last in the field is Hon. Mathew Oyerimade, popularly known as ‘Mato’ whose political chances are widely regarded as slim. Without prior office or mastery of Nigeria’s political maneuvering, he faces steep challenges. One researcher put it bluntly: “Nigerian politics is not for the uninitiated.” His limited visibility and lack of political seasoning and experience remain his greatest undoing.

Bob Beckel, reflecting on similar “outsider” bids in the United States, cautioned: “It’s not enough to have desire. Politics is a craft—you need scars, you need to have lost and learned, you need to have been in the arena.” Oyerimade’s inexperience, much like novice U.S. candidates, may relegate him to the sidelines.

In placing these candidates in a wider perspective, the Voice of Hope report concludes: “Ondo South has always produced strong minds. But in 2027, the battle will be won not by the loudest voice in Abuja, but by the hand that touches the most lives at home.”

It is a lesson Bob Beckel himself often echoed: “Elections, no matter the country, are won on the ground, not in the clouds.”
