A major opposition party has called for President Bola Tinubu’s impeachment following his administration’s decision to cancel a large national oil debt. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) labeled the move a severe violation of public trust.
The controversy centers on President Tinubu’s approval to cancel a$1.42 billion debt. This debt was owed to the federal government by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited. The ADC argues this action represents a gross misconduct.
In a strong statement, the ADC’s National Chairman, Ralphs Nwosu, stated the debt cancellation is a clear case of abuse of power. The party contends that writing off such a significant public debt without clear justification is unlawful. They believe it sets a dangerous precedent for national finance.
The opposition party is not stopping at criticism. They have announced plans to formally approach the courts. Their goal is to challenge the legality of the president’s decision. Simultaneously, they are urging the National Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings against President Tinubu.
This accusation comes at a time when the President’s economic reforms are under intense public and political scrutiny.Policy decisions, particularly in the costly energy sector, are being closely watched by citizens and opposition groups alike.
The ADC’s severe reaction transforms a financial decision into a direct political confrontation. It signals mounting pressure on the Tinubu administration and sets the stage for a significant legal and legislative battle over presidential authority and fiscal responsibility.
