A tense confrontation erupted at dawn Monday in Nyorhyungu, Makurdi, as enraged local youths forcibly expelled a herd of cattle belonging to Dickson Tarkighir, the federal lawmaker representing Makurdi/Guma Constituency, citing an unacceptable security threat posed by the armed men accompanying the animals.

The crisis, rooted in deep-seated community anxieties over persistent violence, began unfolding Sunday evening. Residents reported the arrival of the cattle, accompanied not only by six identified Fulani herders but, critically, by a detachment of heavily armed escorts. This show of weaponry, associated with strangers entering the community, triggered immediate and widespread fear.

“Seeing armed men with strange herders bringing cows into our neighbourhood on a Sunday evening sent chills through everyone,” recounted one resident.

By first light Monday, Nyorhyungu had reached a boiling point. Scores of youths mobilized, flooding the streets in a spontaneous and vehement protest. Chants demanding the immediate removal of the cattle and their minders filled the air, while hastily made placards underscored the core grievance: security. The protesters vociferously argued that the presence of armed outsiders and Fulani herders, particularly following devastating attacks on Benue’s agrarian communities, represented an intolerable risk to their safety.

Attempting to defuse the rapidly escalating situation, Hon. Tarkighir arrived at the scene. The legislator sought to engage the crowd, offering explanations and assurances. However, his intervention was met with fierce rejection. The community’s fear and anger were palpable; trust had evaporated. Protesters remained unmoved, their demand unequivocal: both the cattle and the Fulani handlers must depart immediately.

The standoff reached its climax as the youths, displaying a collective resolve that overrode the presence of security personnel deployed to the area, surged forward. In a dramatic scene, they began actively chasing the herd out of Nyorhyungu. The Fulani herders, facing the determined and angry mob, had no choice but to flee alongside the cattle they tended.

This incident starkly illuminates the fragile security environment in Benue State, particularly concerning the longstanding farmer-herder conflict. The state’s controversial Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law remains a flashpoint. Communities, especially in the wake of brutal attacks often attributed to armed herders, remain hyper-vigilant and deeply suspicious of any movement of cattle, particularly when accompanied by armed men – regardless of the owner’s identity or status.

The involvement of a sitting federal representative’s cattle, guarded by armed personnel, injected a potent layer of political tension and perceived impunity into an already volatile mix. It underscores the profound disconnect between community security perceptions and the actions of certain elites, fueling resentment and direct action when local populations feel their safety is disregarded.

The forcible expulsion highlights a community taking security matters into its own hands, driven by a visceral sense of self-preservation in a region where state protection is often perceived as inadequate. The aftermath leaves critical questions about livestock movement protocols, the role of armed escorts, and the deep scars of violence that continue to destabilize Benue’s communities.
