The death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in captivity has renewed concerns about the growing risks posed by kidnapping and banditry, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria where security challenges continue to threaten residents and travellers alike.

Katsina State Government confirmed on Saturday that the former Director of Defence Information died two weeks after he was abducted alongside his wife in the Matazu area of the state. According to the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, the retired military officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his captors despite efforts by authorities and security agencies to secure his release.

The incident has drawn attention to the dangers faced by victims with underlying health conditions who are forced to endure prolonged periods in captivity. Security experts have repeatedly warned that access to medical care is often severely limited during abductions, increasing the vulnerability of elderly victims and those requiring regular treatment.

Authorities said the couple was travelling to attend a wedding ceremony when they were kidnapped. Days after the abduction, a video released by the captors surfaced online showing the retired general and his wife appealing for intervention. The abductors reportedly demanded the release of three detained associates and the return of livestock they claimed had been seized from them.

In its reaction, the Katsina State Government described the development as a significant loss to the family, the state and the nation. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, through the official statement, extended condolences to the bereaved family and said the tragedy underscored the need for stronger and more coordinated action against criminal groups operating in affected communities.

The death of the retired general comes at a time when concerns over kidnapping remain high across several parts of the country. Security stakeholders say the incident highlights the urgent need for improved preventive measures, faster emergency responses and intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for abductions, particularly along travel routes and in vulnerable rural areas.
