Wike Rules Out 2027 Presidential Bid, Cites Loyalty to Tinubu Amid PDP Zoning Debate

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has firmly dismissed speculation about a potential presidential run in 2027, declaring his unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The former Rivers State governor’s remarks come amid heightened political maneuvering within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over zoning arrangements for the next general election.

Wike, a prominent PDP stalwart, recently stirred debate by urging his party to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to southern Nigeria—a move that fueled conjecture about his own political aspirations. However, in a decisive statement, he quashed such notions, asserting his allegiance to the Tinubu administration.

“I will not contest again. I cannot contest against someone I am working with. Who will win except him?” Wike stated, underscoring the perceived dominance of the incumbent president in Nigeria’s political landscape.

His comments suggest a pragmatic alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite his PDP affiliation—a reflection of the fluid loyalties that often define Nigerian politics. Analysts interpret Wike’s stance as both a personal concession and a tactical positioning within the evolving power dynamics ahead of 2027.

The PDP faces mounting pressure to clarify its zoning strategy, particularly after its 2023 loss to Tinubu. Wike’s call for a southern candidate has been viewed by some as an attempt to shape the party’s direction while keeping his options open.

Beyond national politics, Wike addressed the ongoing turmoil in Rivers State, where tensions between him and Governor Siminalayi Fubara have dominated headlines. Despite widespread reports of a rift, Wike dismissed claims of hostility, describing Fubara as his “political son.”
