Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has taken his 2027 consultations to former President Goodluck Jonathan, but the visit comes against a backdrop of growing concerns about political access and the health of democratic engagement in Nigeria.

Obi met Jonathan on Tuesday alongside several political figures and South-East leaders, describing the visit as part of broader consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, similar engagements have been held with past national leaders, aimed at seeking guidance on the country’s future rather than political endorsements.

The former Anambra State governor said the discussion focused on Nigeria’s democratic trajectory, adding that Jonathan expressed hope for free, fair, and credible elections. Obi stressed that the former president was not being courted for political alignment, but respected as a statesman whose experience remains valuable in shaping national discourse.

However, beyond the consultation, Obi’s media team raised fresh concerns about what it described as increasing restrictions on his ability to engage with the public. In a statement, the group alleged a pattern of cancelled appearances at public institutions, including universities, which they say has occurred multiple times in recent months.

According to the statement, invitations extended to Obi for lectures and public speaking engagements were often withdrawn at short notice, a development they attribute to external pressures. The group warned that such actions could undermine the role of academic institutions as spaces for open dialogue and the exchange of ideas.

While no official response has been issued by authorities regarding the cancellations, the situation highlights broader questions about political inclusivity and freedom of engagement as the 2027 elections approach. Observers say how these concerns are addressed could shape public confidence in the country’s democratic process in the months ahead.
