Nigeria has been ranked as the fourth most prepared African nation for artificial intelligence technology, according to a major new global report. The country placed 72nd worldwide in an index assessing 195 governments.
The study, by Oxford Insights, measures how ready countries are to use AI in public services. It checks 69 different factors across six key areas. These include government policy, digital infrastructure, and technical skills.
This high regional ranking places Nigeria behind only Egypt, Mauritius, and Seychelles on the continent. It suggests the country has a stronger foundation for AI adoption compared to many of its African peers.
Analysts point to Nigeria’s active tech sector and recent government data policies as strengths. However, the global score of 72nd indicates significant room for improvement in areas like nationwide internet access and specialized training.
The report is seen as a crucial benchmark for nations racing to harness AI for economic growth and better governance. For Nigeria, the ranking offers both recognition of progress and a clear map of the work still needed.
As AI becomes increasingly central to global development, this assessment will likely guide future investment and policy decisions in Abuja. The focus now shifts to how Nigeria can improve its score before the next annual report.
